"New music for chamber ensemble
Iris & Vanta
I wish to explore and challenge the middle of my artistic range.
The place where things should stretch equally towards the corners of all genres, and where no one and everyone has opinions about the content.
From there, I will journey to the extremes of our palette.
I'll welcome classical musicians into my sonic realm, a space molded by years of diverse influences, from distant cultures to intimate personal experiences. As a touring musician for 15 years, I feel prepared to build a bridge between worlds.
Until now, I have categorized myself as a jazz musician, but I have also always encountered resistance because of this. Mostly an inner conflict. Jazz is 150 years old and emerged in a country I have no connection to, and with which I do not share ideology and dreams. I can no longer see myself as a standard-bearer of an inheritance that is not mine. I love jazz's approach to music, but I also love having grown up and into an inheritance that relies more on the shoulders of Beethoven and Mozart than of Coltrane and Armstrong, but most of all, I want to create a sound that is a melting pot of all the music I have had close to me over the years... EVEN the years when Green Day and Red Hot Chili Peppers almost had sole right to my CD player. I want to contribute to the sound that exists in the world; I don't believe I challenge the status quo if I repeat what already is.
My compositions are inspired by contrast, embodied in two suites played in alternation: one celebrating the light and beauty (Iris), the other exploring the shadows and sorrows (Vanta)."
